MAULUD Nabi is celebrated to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and in Brunei, Muslims observe it with a procession around the capital. It is celebrated every 12th of Rabiulawal.

The Malud Nabi procession is celebrated quite differently these days compared to in the 1950s and 1960s. For instance, the Maulud procession of yesteryears would normally take place in the afternoon. It would promptly start at 2pm with the recitation of verses of the Holy Quran followed by a religious talk. After the talk, all participants would recite the Selawat three times before starting the procession around the capital.

In the 1960s, participants of the Maulud Nabi procession consisted of males. The customary outfit is the white ‘Cara Melayu’ complete with ‘Sinjang’ and ‘Songkok’. The participants comprised of representatives of government departments, colleges, schools, Mukims and village committees, youth associations as well as private organisations.

After all teams return to the starting point of the procession, participants are provided with refreshments. This will be followed by the presentation of prizes to the best teams who took part in the procession. They are judged based on their formation and performance.
